Pixelapes have just signed up to be a part of Blog Action Day on October 15th.
This is the first year of this new idea which is all about mass participation and everyone involved posting and discussing a single uniting topic, “The Environment”. It will be interesting to see the effect it has on people’s web browsing experiences on the Saturday of the event, and if enough people get involved it will be probably be hard to avoid reading something about the environment that day.
In addition to getting people talking about the environment, they are asking that people donate their ad earnings from the day (or just straight up donate) to one of a number of charities they are suggesting on their website. In a nutshell the organisers describe thus:
Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.
So are there any guidelines? Pretty simple really:
- Publish a post on their blog which relates to an issue of their own choice pertaining to the environment.
Posts do not need to have any specific agenda, they simply need to relate to the larger issue in whatever way suits the blogger and readership. Our aim is not to promote one particular viewpoint, only to push the issue to the table for discussion. - Commit to donating their day’s advertising earnings to an environmental charity of their choice. There is a list of “official” Blog Action Day charities on the site, however bloggers are also free to choose an alternate environmental charity to donate to if they wish.
The campaign was only launched on August 6th and as they state on their own blog they’ve passed 1200 blogs participating and have reached almost a million combined RSS readers, which is certainly an impressive amount and includes the likes of Lifehacker, GigaOm, Freelance Switch and many more.
So, if you’re interested in being involved, just head over to their Get Involved page and get thinking about what you want to say about the environment.
